Foundations of Education
June 21-26, 2026
See Yourself as an Educator?
Are you passionate about working with children and want a real-world look at what it takes to run an elementary classroom?
This rigorously fun institute is designed for future educators interested in the upper-elementary grades (third through fifth) and leads to a Reflective Portfolio that synthesizes your learning and provides a critical foundation for your future teaching career.
You will spend the week using a continuous case study – the profile of one student named Kai – to anchor all of your learning, moving beyond basic theory to experience the practical challenges and deep rewards of making an immediate impact on a student’s life.
What You Will Experience:
This institute is structured around hands-on application and professional reflection, ensuring you develop the core skills necessary for success in a College of Education program:
- Analyze Contemporary Issues: Participate in a Socratic seminar on major topics like school equity, trauma-informed practices, and the role of technology (e.g. generative AI), constantly asking, “How could this policy or issue affect Kai?”
- Design for Diversity: Apply learning theories and equity principles to a continuous case study, using Kai’s profile to design differentiated lessons and assessments that treat student diversity as an asset
- Practice Proactive Management: Engage in a classroom management simulation, using cognitive science (like working memory and routines) to manage behavior effectively, applying interventions specifically designed for the needs of students like Kai.
- Meet Your Future Peers: Participate in a dedicated session with current George Fox education majors to ask questions about classes, student teaching, campus life, and what it’s really like to pursue your degree.
- Connect with Professionals: Engage with practicing elementary teachers (and graduates!) during a “Day in the Life” panel to ask critical questions about curriculum, policy and career longevity.
Cost
The cost for this program is $1,950 per student ($1650 for students from partner schools). This includes a week of immersive college-level courses taught by George Fox faculty, convenient on-campus lodging, three meals per day in the dining hall, and evening programming.
